Topic: Updates on iSTOP MM and mass spectrometry
Speaker: Aigars Brants is a native of the Republic of Latvia residing in Atlanta, GA. He received his PhD from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY and has held various positions at the Boston Consulting Group, Sebia and Roche Tissue Diagnostics. Aigars has 15-year experience in the field of multiple myeloma (MM) diagnostics. He has presented at multiple local, National and International meetings on various topics such as diagnosing multiple myeloma, hemoglobinopathies and diabetes. Currently Aigars is the National Director of Scientific Affairs at the Binding Site, Inc.
Agenda: The presentation will briefly review the current International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) guidelines for diagnosing and monitoring MM. The design and expected outcomes of iSTOP MM study will be reviewed and some of the preliminary results will be discussed (if available).
Serum protein electrophoresis, serum immunofixation and Freelite are methods currently used in diagnosing and monitoring multiple myeloma. Mass spectrometry (MS) is a novel technique with a huge potential to improve MM care. The principles of MS will be briefly reviewed, and the benefits of the technology discussed, in the context of currently available methods.
